Canfornav Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Forest Navigation Co. Ltd., a federally incorporated Canadian Company, established in 1976 and headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. Since its inception, Canfornav has built a solid, professional reputation in the international shipping industry. Throughout the years, Canfornav’s services have grown steadily from operating specialized vessels for the pulp and paper trade, into the range of 5 - 15,000 DWT, to 20 - 40,000 DWT bulkers, carrying a variety of cargoes such as grain, fertilizers, minerals, steel, sugar, metals and copper or zinc concentrates.
In excess of forty percent of our annual voyages involve trades in or out of the St. Lawrence & Great Lakes, originating from Europe, the Mediterranean, the US Gulf, East Coast South America, West Coast South America, including Central America and the Far East.
Canfornav is today one of the largest ocean-going carriers calling the Great Lakes on a regular basis.
As part of our on-going expansion program, Canfornav entered into a new-building program with Wuhu Shipyard, ordering four 27,000 DWT lakes-suitable bulk carriers. Subsequently, we embarked on two long term charters (37,000 DWT lakes-suitable vessels) with Harren & Partner of Bremen, as well as four long term charters (37,000 DWT lakes-suitable vessels) with Parakou Shipping of Hong Kong.
A further series of sixteen 31,000 DWT lakes-suitable bulk carriers was ordered in 2006 and is under construction in three different shipyards in China with deliveries in 2008, 2009 and 2010. This leaves Canfornav with an ultra modern Lakes fleet and in a powerful position to undertake performance of long term large size contracts.
Special emphasis on our new-buildings has been given to ice strengthening, electrically ventilated holds, fast turning ship cranes and open hatch designs. This, together with excellent tank top strength and alternate hold loading capability, gives these ships the flexibility many of our customers have been looking for.
